NYCHAPS is hosting a youth Archaeology Week for middle school students! Children entering grades 6th-8th are invited to register for this educational and fun week. The students will be conducting real archaeology under the leadership of local archaeologist, Jeri Jones and the York History Center’s Valerie Long, Manager of School Programs. This event will happen at the site of a prominent 19th century industrial leader’s homestead in Carroll Township, just east of the Borough of Dillsburg. (Since the archaeological site is on private property, the address will be given out only to registered campers.)
“Students will learn the various procedures in conducting an archaeological excavation, cleaning and preparing the artifacts for identification and report writing. The students will hopefully find pieces of the puzzle of understanding how residents lived in the mid 1800’s and, [specifically], how this industrial leader lived. You can’t get any more real than this,” according to Mr Jones. Ms. Long will also schedule a daily mini-program for the students that will be related to the area’s history.
The students must be dropped off and picked up at the site by a parent or guardian. Students must supply their own lunch and beverages. Registration is now open for the week with a limited number of spots available. Contact NYCHAPS office at admin@northernyorkhistorical.org or 717-502-1440 for application and medical form.
