GETTYSBURG BRASS BAND FESTIVAL June 5-9,2024

Since 1998, the historic town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, has been the home of the Gettysburg Brass Band Festival. Some 3000 listeners from the Mid-Atlantic United States attend the event to enjoy brass bands from seven states and Washington, D.C.

The roster of musical ensembles taking part in 2024 include brass bands, community ensembles, and jazz groups as well as a host of other activities that include a benefit golf tournament, community picnic, and benefit jazz concert with a catered dinner.

Latimore Valley Fishing Derby

Adams County Trout Unlimited's 19th Annual Children's Fishing Derby will be held at the Special Regulations Fishing Area at the Latimore Valley Fairgrounds. The event is open to all children ages 5-15. Stocking will begin at approximately 7:15 am, with fishing scheduled from 8-11 am. Lunch and prizes will be available. This is a bait fishing-only event, and all participants should bring their own fishing gear.

At the conclusion of the derby, every child will receive a prize.

Go Fish, Gettysburg!

Adams County Trout Unlimited is partnering with the Gettysburg Nature Alliance for their June 29th "Go Fish, Gettysburg!" program. 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

The program will be at the GNA barn facility at 720 Pumping Station Road, near the Sachs Covered Bridge on June 29th. To-date, the program is planned to feature fly casting and tying instruction (by SCTU), a nature walk, an invasive species walk, and a Pennsylvania steam identification presentation.

Healthy Adams County Spring Walk at Gettysburg Rec Park

Join Steve Neibler, GARA board member at 1:00 pm for a 2 mile led walk to learn what's new at GARA. Open walk from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Bring the kids to enjoy the playgrounds or the dogs to enjoy the dog park. Park at the Charlie Sterner Building then walk the GIL trail to the blue bridge, return, then walk the 1 mile Biser Trail as many times as you like. There will be special refreshments as this is the last walk of the season. Walk is flat and paved.

Healthy Adams County Spring Walk at Carroll Commons

Join Mayor Ron Harris at 1:00 pm for a led 1 mile walk to hear about recreation in Carroll Valley. Open walking is from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Walk the scenic 1 mile trail as many times as you like. Trail is pea gravel, relatively flat, and nicely wooded.

Healthy Adams County Spring Walk at Gettysburg College/Peace Light

Join a 3 mile led walk by an historian who will share the history of the Peace Light Monument at 1:00 pm. Open walking is from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Walk is from Gettysburg College Musselman Athletic Field parking lot to the Peace Light on a paved road, sidewalks, and a gravel trail. It is a bit hilly with little shade.

Highmark Wholecare Memorial Day Free 5K

Free 5K through the Wyndham Hotel Gateway Gettysburg Complex off routes 30 and 15. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to register. Run/walk starts at the Wyndham Hotel. Medals will be provided for all children who finish. This 5K is on paved roads with some gentle hills.

Healthy Adams County Spring Walk at Twin Lakes West

Join Exercise Specialist Stefanie Maitland for a 2 mile led walk at 1:00 pm. Open walking from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Park at Clementina's Pizza (enjoy a yummy meal too) then take a right out of the parking lot onto Fairplay Rd. A map will be provided to follow. This is a great walk for kids! Watch for signs to do silly and fun activities throughout the neighborhood. Walk is on quiet neighborhood roads, mostly level and sunny.

Healthy Adams County Spring Walk at Oakside Park

Join Dr. Catherine Mauss at 1:00 pm for a led 2 mile walk to learn about strengthening bones and the health benefits of walking. Open walking is from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Bring your kids for a BINGO scavenger hunt and post a picture of you with one of the Bingo items on Facebook to be entered to win a ticket to our Ice Cream Walk. The walk is very scenic on a mostly flat gravel trail with some paved areas.

Join Christine Demas, Chair of the Mt. Joy Township Supervisors for a 1:00 pm led walk around the Outlets, Core, and down a scenic road to the White Run Water facility. Open walking is from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Check-in at the gazebo. Walk is relatively flat on sidewalks and roadways.

Healthy Adams County Spring Walk at GNMP Amphitheater

Enjoy a led 2 mile walk that is slightly shady and hilly on dirt and paved roads at 1:00 pm. Open walking is from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The walk uses both the equestrian trail and Confederate Ave. Park at the GNMP Amphitheater on W. Confederate Avenue between Fairfield Rd and Millerstown Rd. There will also be a scavenger hunt for those that choose to participate!

Enjoy a relatively flat 2 mile walk on paved, gravel and grassy trails by lovely horse pastures and a scenic pond. Join Heather Rohrbaugh, Events Coordinator at Hoffman Homes for a 1:00 led walk. Open walking is from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. From Gettysburg, take Rt 97 South for 5 miles, turn right on Hoffman Home Rd. Go 2 miles, turn right on Orphanage Rd. Turn left at Entrance 2 "Culinary and Educational Services".

Healthy Adams County Spring Walk GNMP Visitor’s Center

Join a led walk with a HAC speaker at 1:00 or an open walk from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm at GNMP Visitor's Center located between Baltimore Pike and Taneytown Rd, just south of Hunt Ave. Park in Visitor Center Lot 3. Use the wooded trail to walk to Pleasanton Ave then the road to walk past the PA Monument, The Angle and Meade's Headquarters, and back via another trail. Walk is 2 miles paved and relatively flat.

Pop Goes The GCC. The Gettysburg Civic Chorus is the community's oldest musical organization in our town having been formed in 1962.   The Chorus will be presenting their annual Spring Concerts , June 1 and 2 at 3p.m. at the Gettysburg Area Middle School, 37 Lefever St, Gettysburg, PA 17325.

The concert features songs from some of the most well known pop composers and artists.  Some are strongly associated with movies such as Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate.  We hope you can attend one of these concerts.

Sunset Rocks Trail 6 mile hike, 1100 Pine Grove Rd, Gardners. This hike includes a short section of very large rocks that requires use of both hands and legs to scale. This section will be taken very slowly and rewards us with nice views. The hike includes a brief stop at Camp Michaux, a WWII POW site. Hike is hilly in parts. Difficult, but rewarding.

Gettysburg Rec Park to Pickett's Charge Field 4 mile hike. Park at the Sterner Building at the Rec Park, 545 Long Lane, Gettysburg. The hike will use the Biser Trail to get to Howard Street, then neighborhood streets to the Armory onto W. Confederate Ave. At the VA Memorial the hike will head left across the fields used by Pickett's troops emerging onto Hancock Ave. by The Angle. The hike returns via neighborhood streets. Expect a quiet winter experience. Relatively flat, part gravel/dirt trail, part roadways and sidewalks. Easy, but longer.

NYCHAPS is hosting a youth Archaeology Week for middle school students! Children entering grades 6th-8th are invited to register for this educational and fun week. The students will be conducting real archaeology under the leadership of local archaeologist, Jeri Jones and the York History Center's Valerie Long, Manager of School Programs. This event will happen at the site of a prominent 19th century industrial leader's homestead in Carroll Township, just east of the Borough of Dillsburg. Hermitage Trail/AT to Chimney Rocks, starting from Old Forge Picnic Grounds, 8006 Old Forge Rd, Waynesboro, PA. 5 miles. The hike is on the Appalachian Trail (AT) and the Hermitage Trail which is uphill to a rock formation called Chimney Rocks. The views are great including a lot of Michaux State Forest and the Waynesboro Reservoir. The hike returns to the parking lot via the AT. This is a moderately strenuous hike with 1000 feet of elevation gain over the first 2 miles, we will take breaks, but do expect to be challenged.

Gettysburg National Military Park, Sachs Bridge to Eisenhower Farm. 2.5 to 4 miles. Park at Sachs Bridge, located on Waterworks Rd. Gettysburg. The hike crosses Sachs Bridge then continues on Waterworks Rd, to Red Rock Road to the Eisenhower Farm. A speaker will meet us outside the Eisenhower home to share some history about the Eisenhowers and their home in Gettysburg. The hike will walk the Eisenhower property then return. Easy.

Healthy Adams Co/Strawberry Hill Winter Hike – 4.5 miles

Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve, 1537 Mt Hope Rd Fairfield, Foothills Trail. 4.5 miles. This trail provides access to some of the more remote areas of the Mt. Hope Trail System. The trail is hilly (700 ft of elevation) with several crossings of Swamp Creek and some downed trees, includes one very nice viewpoint. Difficult

Led by Physical Fitness Task Force: Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Buck Ridge Trail, 1100 Pine Grove Rd. Gardners. 4 or 6 miles. The hike will be out and back on the Buck Ridge trail that connects to King’s Gap. Turnaround point will be either at mile 2 or mile 3, weather and group dependent. As we bid farewell to 2023, Gettysburg's Lincoln Square will undergo an exciting transformation into a brightly colored, lively dance venue, reflecting a departure from the traditional way this historic town celebrates the arrival of the new year.

A new tradition was started in 2022, when the town celebrated the inaugural “Let’s Raise Abe’s Hat” along with ringing in the new year with fireworks. This year, Gettysburg Pride and Gettysburg Alive have elected to turn the square into a dance party rather than continuing with the fireworks display from years past.

The Gettysburg Choral Society, Inc. will present a summer series of patriotic concerts entitled “Let Freedom Ring!” Featuring some of America’s favorite songs, the program will highlight a popular musical rendition of “The Gettysburg Address.” There will also be a time of special recognition for America’s veterans.

The chorus will be joined by Gettysburg’s own Flute Flock, directed by Georgia Hollabaugh.
