1943: America at War

Join the National Park Service in commemorating the events of 80 years ago for Eisenhower National Historic Site’s 2023 World War II Weekend event. This year’s event’s theme is “1943: America at War” when 1943 saw the American people take part in a global struggle against fascism and tyranny, joining together with their Allies abroad to provide the material, manpower, and leadership needed to fight the Axis powers during WWII.

From September 15-17, park rangers, guest speakers, living historians, and partner organizations will bring the stories of 1943 to life through three days of programming and interactive activities for visitors of all ages.

Who:  Eisenhower National Historic Site.

What:  2023 World War II Weekend.

Where:  Eisenhower National Historic Site and Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.

When:  September 15-17, 2023.

Why:  Eisenhower National Historic Site preserves the farm of General and 34th President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Adjacent to the Gettysburg battlefield, the farm served the president and first lady as a weekend retreat and as a meeting place for world leaders. With its peaceful setting and view of South Mountain, it was a respite from Washington, DC, and a backdrop for efforts to reduce Cold War tensions.

Visit the Eisenhower National Historic Site website for further details: https://www.nps.gov/eise.

Note: On Friday September 15, Eisenhower NHS will be closed to visitation to facilitate event set-up. Only event participants and staff will be on-site that day. No house tours or guided tours of the Eisenhower site will occur. The Friday evening cemetery walk and keynote program will take place off-site.
