Join Ranger Christopher Gwinn and Dr. Scott Hancock, Professor of Africana Studies at Gettysburg College, and explore the story of Pickett’s Charge from a different perspective. How have battles over memory and meaning shaped our understanding of the climactic moment of the Battle of Gettysburg? From contested monuments & veterans reunions, to the experience of free and enslaved African Americans on the battlefield, this walk uncovers the many layers of history on the battlefield.
This free program begins at the Meade Equestrian Statue on Hancock Avenue and concludes at the Virginia Memorial, Auto Tour Stop 5. This program involves significant walking, occasionally over rough terrain. Water, headgear, sun protection, insect repellent and sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended. All four tires must remain on pavement when parking alongside avenues.
