Hear stories of the colorful characters who worked behind the scenes in Civil War espionage and learn the new techniques and technologies they employed. Retired intelligence professional, Donald E. Markle, wrote two books covering the spymasters and their technologies: Spies and Spymasters of the Civil War, and The Telegraph Goes to War.
This program, designed by Markle before his death, will be presented by Antigoni Ladd, who worked with the author for ten years. It covers both Confederate and Union spies and shows the important role played by women and blacks, who were less subject to suspicion and could often move freely in enemy territory. Markle’s insight as a former intelligence officer provides perspective on those spies who mastered new techniques for conveying information, and those who took foolish risks.
