With more than seven states participating, this living history program covers the medical aspects of taking care of the wounded including surgeons, stewards, chaplains, grave diggers, litter bearers, purveyors, nurses and more.
Don’t miss these daily activities in the Medical Tent on site during the Patriots of the Civil War’s Acts of Valor 160th Anniversary Re-enactment, produced by the Society of Civil War Surgeons.
Event is ticketed and takes place on private property (not the Gettysburg National Military Park battlefield).

Pill making during 1860’s & Touch Table for Children | This on-going session will demonstrate to the public the method used to make pills in the field for distribution to the troops. The Touch Table for children has actual reproductions of instruments & other items used by the surgeon.

Minor surgery at McPhearson Farm | This scheduled session will provide the public with the process of simple bullet extraction from a spent bullet that has struck the leg of a Confederate soldier. During the operation a running commentary will take the audience step by step as the surgeon would have performed this operation.

Count of “9’s” Disease vs. Battlefield Injuries | This scheduled session demonstrates to the public the impact of Disease vs. Battlefield injury to the life of the Civil War soldier. The session requires nine audience members.

“Sick Call” on the Farm | This scheduled session will demonstrate the diseases that are prevalent to the Civil War soldier. Two of every three soldiers that died during the war were not from bullets but from common childhood diseases. Requires six to nine audience members.

“Brain Surgery” during Civil War | This scheduled session demonstrates trephining on a Civil War soldier who has head trauma. During the war the survivability of this operation was 46%. Most of the public does not realize that the Egyptians and Incas successfully performed the same operations without chloroform.

CSA Major Surgery – Amputations | This scheduled session demonstrates either a hand or foot amputation on a civil war soldier. These operations were survivable 75% of the time. There were 80,000 operations during the Civil War. The majority were not amputations.

Medical Paperwork, the forgotten work. | This on-going session provides the public with an insight into the four major types of paperwork kept by the medical corps. Included are: patient book, diet book, weather observations, pharmacy log. Reproduction logs will be displayed and discussed including a question-and-answer session.
