Instead of discussing or following an attack, this tour IS an attack—an attack on our conventional understandings of the Battle of Gettysburg.
This special program of the Encounters with History series will focus on the sweeping command decisions made by commanders—with a new perspective intended to question assumptions enshrined in many of the books we have read. Why did Lee ignore Longstreet? Why did Ewell fail to attack? How did Meade win? The concept of “Shadows” is drawn from the writings and tours of legendary Harper’s Ferry Chief Historian Dennis Frye and his book Antietam Shadows. This tour takes Frye’s concepts and his appetite for challenging convention and applies these “shadows” to Gettysburg.
Reservations are required and available through Aug. 8. Friends of Gettysburg receive member rate. A boxed lunch will be provided for this full day of programming. This tour involves short, easy walks on paved paths from the Seminary to Lee’s Headquarters and from the Virginia Memorial to the “Point of Woods” (east edge of Spangler Woods).
The Gettysburg Foundation is the official non-profit partner of the National Parks at Gettysburg. Proceeds from your reservation purchase help support the Gettysburg Foundation’s mission of preservation and education in partnership with Gettysburg National Military Park and Eisenhower National Historic Site.
