The Road to Revolution: 250th Anniversary Gathering at Gettys Tavern

In anticipation of America’s 250th anniversary, Main Street Gettysburg, the Borough of Gettysburg, the Adams County Historical Society, and Destination Gettysburg invite guests to The Road to Revolution: 250th Anniversary Gathering at Gettys Tavern on June 24th.

Soon after the “shot heard ’round the world” rang out at Lexington and Concord in April 1775, word reached the frontier of south-central Pennsylvania. In response, residents of the Marsh Creek settlement gathered at the tavern of Samuel Gettys—on the very ground where Gettysburg would soon be established—and formed a company of volunteers. These men marched to York and then on to Boston, where they joined General George Washington in the opening chapter of the American Revolution.

Commemorate this powerful moment in Adams County’s Revolutionary past – 250 years to the day after it occurred – on the very site where it happened. This short outdoor ceremony will feature period music, remarks from local leaders, a history of the event by Adams County Historian Timothy H. Smith, and a rededication of the plaque honoring the men who answered liberty’s call in 1775.

Please gather at the Gettys Tavern memorial plaque located outside the exit of the Gettysburg Racehorse Alley Parking Garage (74 E. Racehorse Alley).
