Gettysburg’s United States Colored Troops with Tim Smith

The Emancipation Proclamation, which took effect on January 1, 1863, established the United States Colored Troops (USCT). And although it took several months to create, enlist, and train these units, these measures eventually resulted in the recruitment of over 170,000 Black men, many former slaves, in the defense of the country. Over 100 of these men were born in, recruited from, or resided at one time in Adams County, Pennsylvania, with over 30 of them being buried in Gettysburg Lincoln Cemetery.

Join Historian Timothy H. Smith as he discusses the stories of the military service of these often-overlooked veterans of the American Civil War.

This program is FREE/Members; $10/General Admission.
