January 5th – Cow On The Tracks
On June 24, 1863, the 26TH Pennsylvania Emergency Regiment was racing toward Gettysburg—700 men ready to stop a Confederate invasion. But just outside town, history took an unexpected turn… caused by a cow! An elderly woman herding her cow across a railroad bridge got out of the way just in time, but the cow didn’t – and the train derailed. Because of one unlucky bovine, the regiment never reached its assigned post.
