Something big is taking shape in Gettysburg—literally. As Adams County marks America’s 250th anniversary, a new public art mural transforms the exterior wall of the Adams County Historical Society’s Beyond the Battle Museum into a powerful visual story of themed to address, “Who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re headed.”
The mural, titled “Adams County: Stories Past, Present, and Future,” is being created by artist Sarah Jacobs, whose work many locals already recognize from her striking murals at the Adams County Arts Council. Known for her ability to blend intimate human moments with expansive landscapes, Jacobs was selected to bring this ambitious, community-driven project to life.

What makes this mural especially meaningful is how it begins—not with paint, but with people. It started in 2025 and continues into 2026 with Adams County residents invited to share personal stories through workshops, conversations, and creative activities. These collected voices reflecting everyday life, pivotal moments, and hopes for the future are directly inspire the mural design.
Jacobs is deeply involved in the process, participating in community gatherings, reviewing stories and materials, and shaping them into a unified visual narrative. The finished mural is being unveiled with a public celebration featuring storytelling and performance, making the artwork not just something to see, but something experienced.
As plans evolve and community engagement unfolds, this page will continue to share updates. The mural is a lasting legacy of the 250th, one rooted in the voices of Adams County and created to endure long after the anniversary year has passed.
