A Great and Truthful Medium: Photography at Gettysburg and Beyond

Gettysburg College presents “A Great and Truthful Medium:” Photography at Gettysburg and Beyond, an exhibition featuring selections from the Ron Perisho Collection. The exhibit highlights nineteenth- and early twentieth-century photographs of the Gettysburg battlefield and town.

The collection includes iconic images of the battle’s aftermath by photographers such as Alexander Gardner, Timothy O’Sullivan, James Gibson, and Mathew Brady, along with work by regional photographers including William H. Tipton and the Tyson brothers. Photographs in the exhibit include albumen prints, tintypes, stereographs, and lantern slides that document the battlefield and community during and after the Civil War.

The exhibition runs September 2 through December 5, 2026, and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Schmucker Art Gallery in Schmucker Hall on the Gettysburg College campus.
