Juneteenth | Emancipation Proclamation Commemoration

Part of the Official Juneteenth 2026 Programming

An Emancipation Proclamation Commemoration takes place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at historic Christ Lutheran Church, with an open house beginning at 2:00 p.m. The program invites the community to gather for a special Juneteenth observance reflecting on the significance of the Emancipation Proclamation and its lasting impact on the American journey toward freedom.

Through a blend of music, historical interpretation, and readings connected to President Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 proclamation, the program explores the historical meaning of the document and its continued relevance today. Storytelling and reflection will highlight the ways the proclamation reshaped the nation and advanced the ongoing pursuit of liberty and equality.

During the program, participants will also be invited to contribute to Gettysburg’s Juneteenth Time Capsule Project by writing messages that reflect on the meaning of freedom and their hopes for future generations. This collective reflection offers a meaningful opportunity for visitors and community members to connect past, present, and future while honoring the legacy of emancipation.
