A Boy’s Experience During the Battle of Gettysburg: Daniel Skelly’s Story

Historian Timothy H. Smith presents “A Boy’s Experiences During the Battles of Gettysburg” on Saturday, May 16, at 11 a.m. at Gettysburg History, 625 Biglerville Road, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Born in December 1844, Daniel Skelly was 18 years old during the Battle of Gettysburg. Like many Gettysburg townspeople, he saw the battle’s destruction and aftermath firsthand, then shared those memories for decades. In 1932, with help from his son, Skelly printed his recollections in a small booklet that became one of the most complete and insightful civilian accounts of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Smith explores Skelly’s stories in greater detail, including his place within a prominent Gettysburg family, his connection to older brother Jack Skelly, known as Jennie Wade’s boyfriend, and his work at the Fahnestock Brothers Store. The program also shares new information about the production of Skelly’s well-known booklet.

Registration is required. Tickets are free for Gettysburg History members and $10 for general admission.
