Behind Union Lines: An Exclusive Look at the Jacob Weikert Farm and Field Hospital

Gettysburg History presents a special guided exploration of the historic Jacob Weikert Farm on July 2 from 10 a.m. to noon, offering an in-depth look at one of the most significant Union field hospitals of the Battle of Gettysburg. Historian Tim Smith and Shriver House Museum director Abbie Hoffman will lead participants through the stories, landscapes, and human experiences tied to this remarkable Civil War site.

Situated along Taneytown Road near Little Round Top in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the 18th-century Jacob Weikert Farm became a critical medical center during and after the battle. Through compelling storytelling and battlefield interpretation, the program traces the lives of individuals connected to the property, from civilian heroine Tillie Pierce to Union General Stephen Weed, while examining the devastating realities faced by soldiers, surgeons, and local families during the aftermath of the fighting.

The experience includes rare interior access inside the Weikert farmhouse, along with guided exploration beyond the property to neighboring farms and the seldom-visited eastern base of Little Round Top. Set in the heart of Adams County battlefield country, the tour offers a unique opportunity to connect Gettysburg’s iconic landscape with the personal stories that unfolded there in July 1863.

Participants should meet at the Jacob Weikert Farm, 1051 Taneytown Road, Gettysburg, PA.

Registration is required. Tickets cost $30 for Gettysburg History members and $40 for general admission. Reserve your tickets here.
