Invisible Backbone: The Lives and Labor of Women in Colonial America offers an illuminating look at the experiences of women whose work helped build the foundations of the nation. Presented by the Fairfield Area Historical Society, this educational program takes place on September 18, 2026, at 7 p.m. at Village Hall, 108 West Main Street, Fairfield.
Historian Dominish Marie Miller explores the daily lives of colonial women, examining the demanding work they performed in their homes, businesses, and communities while navigating a society that afforded them limited legal and political rights. The presentation highlights the often-overlooked contributions women made to the development and success of Colonial America, providing valuable historical perspective on their role in shaping early American life.
As the United States marks its 250th anniversary in 2026, this program brings attention to the women whose labor, resilience, and contributions helped sustain colonial communities during the nation’s formative years. Their stories provide a deeper understanding of everyday life in early America and the people who shaped its history.
