Museums aren’t just for adults and history buffs. Many of Gettysburg’s museums are designed to help younger visitors connect with the past in meaningful and engaging ways.
One museum that families with young children especially enjoy is Children of Gettysburg, 1863. More than a typical children’s museum, this experience shares the stories of the children, teens, and young adults who lived in Gettysburg during and after the Battle of Gettysburg. Through hands-on exhibits and immersive displays, young visitors can see history through the eyes of people their own age.
Another favorite for families is the Gettysburg Heritage Center, where interactive exhibits help visitors of all ages understand how residents experienced the battle. While known for its award-winning animated map, visitors can browse artifacts and child-friendly displays that help history feel accessible and engaging.
Gettysburg’s award-winning, Beyond the Battle Museum, tells the story of Gettysburg and its residents before, during, and after the Civil War. Through twelve interactive exhibit galleries, including the popular exhibit, Caught in the Crossfire, families can explore rare artifacts and learn how the region evolved from prehistoric times to the present day.
Families looking for an interactive experience should also consider the Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center. Children can participate in free scavenger hunts that encourage them to explore the galleries while searching for artifacts and images throughout the museum. Families can also climb to the historic Cupola, where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Gettysburg from one of the most iconic vantage points in town.
No trip to Gettysburg is complete without a stop to the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center. Here, children can experience the famous Gettysburg Cyclorama, one of only two surviving cycloramas in the United States, and participate in Junior Ranger programs.
