Historic Farnsworth House Tour

A Thursday through Monday 2p guided tour of the Historic Farnsworth House Inn takes guests inside one of Gettysburg’s most storied properties, listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Every floorboard and bullet hole carries traces of the Battle of Gettysburg and the people who lived through it.

The tour leads guests to the garret, or attic, where a Confederate sharpshooter may have fired the fatal shot that killed Jennie Wade, the only civilian directly killed during the battle. Guests can also explore curated displays of authentic Civil War relics, with each artifact offering another connection to the chaos and courage of 1863.

The experience continues in the cellar, where a Victorian viewing parlor features an antique coffin, period photographs, church pews and other furnishings that reflect the mourning customs of the era.

Outside, guests can examine more than 100 bullet holes still visible in the brick façade, a lasting reminder of the house’s frontline role in the conflict. Throughout the tour, guides share the layered history of the Farnsworth House, from its original builder to its present-day stewards.

While other tours may discuss the Farnsworth House from outside, this experience takes guests inside the historic inn itself. The property has also earned national recognition for its haunted history, including a place among USA Today’s top haunted hotels.

Tour operates Thursday through Sunday from August 6 for the remainder of the year.

The property operates as a working bed-and-breakfast, so access to certain rooms within the historic main house may change without notice.

The Farnsworth House Inn prohibits smoking and vaping. Staff may ask guests who appear intoxicated to leave the tour.

All participants must sign a waiver before the tour begins.
