The Jennie Wade Auxiliary #27, Auxiliary to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, presents a ceremony honoring the 70th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial at Gettysburg National Military Park on Saturday, September 12, at 1 p.m.
The Grand Army of the Republic Memorial depicts Albert Woolson, the last surviving member of the Grand Army of the Republic, who died on August 2, 1956, at the age of 109. The National Organization of the Auxiliary to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War built and dedicated the monument on September 12, 1956, to preserve the memory of all Union veterans of the American Civil War.
For many years, the memorial has taken center stage as part of Remembrance Day events hosted by organizations dedicated to preserving the history and memory of Union veterans.
The anniversary program includes a brief history presented by Ann McMillin, National Vice President of the Auxiliary to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, along with additional guest speakers. The Gettysburg Independent Blues post the Colors, and a wreath-laying ceremony honors the memorial and the Union veterans it commemorates.
The program also shares the history of the Grand Army of the Republic and Albert Woolson with the public.
