Remembering the Benevolence of Dedicated Women During the American Civil War

Explore stories of the original Patriot Daughters of Lancaster, a soldiers’ aid society composed of women from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Learn what these dedicated women did on the home front to support the soldiers. Hear accounts of their trip to Gettysburg in 1863 to help cook and nurse at the Christ Lutheran Church hospital. Discover more about the benevolent women of this important organization and their invitation to lay flowers on President Lincoln’s casket on the funeral train. The presentation will touch on the initiation of the building of the Soldiers and Sailors monument, created in 1874, on Penn Square in Lancaster City.

The gate opens at 5:30 p.m. for ticket holders to explore the historic site – the best-preserved field hospital from the American Civil War. Hosted by the Gettysburg Foundation, the program takes place in the historic barn at the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital.

Tickets are required in advance and can be purchased by calling the Gettysburg Foundation Guest Relations team, 717-334-2436, or by visiting GettysburgFoundation.org. Ticket holders may drive to the property, located at 488 Blacksmith Shop Road, Gettysburg, for the June 14 program.

The Gettysburg Foundation is the official non-profit partner of the National Parks at Gettysburg. Proceeds from your ticket purchase help to provide a lasting connection to our nation’s next generation while supporting the Foundation’s mission of preservation and education in partnership with the Gettysburg National Military Park and Eisenhower National Historic Site.
