In Their Footsteps: Jennie Wade’s Gettysburg

On the morning of July 3, 1863, fierce sharpshooter fire erupted in Gettysburg as Union soldiers on Cemetery Hill traded shots with Confederates on the town’s southern edge. Trapped in their homes, many civilians were caught in the crossfire—and one, Mary Virginia “Jennie” Wade, lost her life. Join historian and guide Timothy H. Smith as we walk the same streets Jennie once knew and explore the sites connected to the life and tragic death of one of Gettysburg’s most famous residents.

Tours begin at the Shriver House Museum.
