President Abraham Lincoln spent less than 24 hours in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, but his brief visit became an enduring part of American history.

Lincoln arrived by train on the evening of November 18, 1863, ahead of the dedication of the new Soldiers’ National Cemetery. The following day, he delivered a speech lasting only about two minutes: the Gettysburg Address. Its 272 words connected the sacrifice at Gettysburg to the nation’s founding ideals of liberty and equality and called for a “new birth of freedom.”
