Atlas of Independence: John Adams and the American Revolution

Guests are invited to join historian Chris Mackowski for an engaging program that weaves the story of President John Adams into the unfolding drama of the American Revolution. When the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, few doubted who had been most responsible. One delegate declared, “The man to whom the country is most indebted for the great measure of independence is Mr. John Adams… I call him the Atlas of American independence.”

Born of humble means outside Boston, Adams rose through relentless work ethic to become one of the colony’s most successful attorneys. Yet his ambition burned for something greater, and he longed for an occasion that would call forth all his powers. As tensions with Great Britain erupted, Adams found himself thrust onto the national stage, transforming into the intellectual architect of American independence and urging his contemporaries boldly into an unknown future.

The program will conclude with a book signing.

Admission is free for Gettysburg History Members and $10 for General Admission.
