Churchill’s Citadel: Chartwell and the Gatherings Before the Storm

The Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center presents Chartwell and the Gatherings Before the Storm on Friday, September 18, at Kinsley Theater. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the program running from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower believed World War II was won through alliances, and few partnerships proved more consequential than the relationship between British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the United States. Katherine Carter, curator of Chartwell, Churchill’s home in Kent, England, explores the life and leadership of the man Eisenhower once described as “a champion of freedom.”

Carter, author of Churchill’s Citadel: Chartwell and the Gatherings Before the Storm, examines Churchill’s leadership, personality, and political outlook during the turbulent years of the 1930s. The conversational program explores how Churchill prepared both himself and Britain for war while Chartwell became an important gathering place during the years leading up to World War II.

Katherine Carter signs copies of her work following the presentation, and Churchill’s Citadel is available for purchase at the event.

The program takes place at Kinsley Theater inside the Museum & Visitor Center in Gettysburg. Admission is free, with advance ticket reservations required for theater seating.
