Declaration 1776: The Big Bang of Modern Democracy/The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History – Traveling Exhibit

Declaration 1776: The Big Bang of Modern Democracy arrives at the Adams County Library from June 22 through July 17 as part of The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Traveling Exhibit series. This educational exhibition explores the lasting global influence of the United States Declaration of Independence and highlights how nations around the world have used the Declaration of 1776 as a model in their own movements for freedom, equality, and self-determination.

Using historical primary sources and interpretive displays, the exhibit examines the powerful legacy of American independence and the continuing impact of democratic ideals across generations and international borders. Presented in Gettysburg during the lead-up to America’s 250th anniversary, the exhibition connects the nation’s founding history with ongoing conversations about democracy, civic identity, and preservation of historical knowledge.

The exhibit supports education, preservation, and celebration by encouraging visitors to explore the historical context surrounding the founding of the United States while reflecting on how those ideas continue to shape the future. The Adams County Library System continues its role as a cultural and educational resource in Gettysburg through programs and exhibits tied to the nation’s semiquincentennial commemoration.
