WINTER 2024 Hiking

Hike your way to better health with The Physical Fitness Task Force’s guided Fitness Hikes.

These fully-guided hikes are open to beginner and seasoned hikers; we will take breaks as necessary and maintain a moderate group pace.  Trails may be uneven or muddy. Please wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring a water bottle. Walks are held rain or shine. In case of severe weather please check www.facebook.com/healthyadamscounty .

Wednesday, Feb 14, 10:00 AM, Caledonia St. Park. Hosack Run Trail. 3.5 miles. Park at the end of Quarry Gap Rd. From 30 West, turn right onto 233 at the traffic light by the Caledonia Furnace. Go 1 mile on 233 then turn left onto Quarry Gap Rd. There will be two hikes led from this point, one easier out to the Long Pine Run Reservoir, and the other up the Hosack Run Trail and back down on the AT – this hike is rockier with significant elevation – moderately difficult.

Saturday, Feb 24, 7:30 PM, Strawberry Hills Nature Preserve 1537 Mt Hope Rd Fairfield. 1 mile. Hunger Moon Night Hike. Limited to 30 people, must register at education@strawberryhill.org. Join a Naturalist to learn about the frozen forest landscape. The hike will last about an hour. Please bring a flashlight.

Saturday, March 9th, 1:30 PM. 4 miles. Gettysburg Rec Park to Pickett’s Charge Field. Park at the Sterner Building at the Rec Par, 545 Long Lane, Gettysburg. The hike will use the Biser Trail to get to Howard Street, then neighborhood streets to the Armory onto W. Confederate Ave. At the VA Memorial the hike will head left across the fields used by Pickett’s troops, emerging onto Hancock Avenue by The Angle. The hike then returns via neighborhood streets. Expect a quiet winter experience. Relatively flat, part gravel/dirt trail, part roadways and sidewalks. Easy, but longer.

Tuesday, March 19th, 10 AM. Sunset Rocks Trail, 6 miles. 1100 Pine Grove Rd, Gardners. This hike includes a short section of very large rocks that requires use of both hands and legs to scale. This section will be taken very slowly and rewards us with nice views. The hike includes a brief stop at Camp Michaux, a WW11 POW site. Hike is hilly in parts. Difficult, but rewarding.
