Eisenhower’s 135th Birthday Commemoration

The Eisenhower Society commemorates Dwight Eisenhower’s 135th birthday anniversary at its annual statue ceremony, Saturday, October 11 at 12 Noon by the Eisenhower at Gettysburg statue outside the Eisenhower Admissions Building at Gettysburg College. Readings from Eisenhower’s memoirs, brief comments by Society officials, and a wreath laying will occur at the site. The Eisenhower Memorial and the Robert M. Hoffman Family Trust Scholarships will be presented to four Gettysburg College students. The Eisenhower Society ROTC Leadership Award will also be presented to an outstanding ROTC cadet.

At 1 p.m. all are welcomed to gather for luncheon at the Dobbin House. The price is $35 a person. Luncheon registration ends at 12 noon on Monday October 6.

After lunch, the featured speaker is Professor Brian Black of Penn State University/Altoona. An authority on American environmental history, Professor Black will speak on “Ike’s Road Trip,” the title of his recent book focused on Eisenhower’s participation in a 1919 cross country army convoy. That experience planted the seeds of Eisenhower’s interest in improving American transport through a national road system—a project launched with the passage, during his presidency, of the National Highway Act. His book will be available at the luncheon, and he will gladly sign it at the conclusion of his program.
