Fields of Fire: Gettysburg’s First Day Farms

History comes alive on July 1 at 10 a.m. during “Fields of Fire: Gettysburg’s First Day Farms,” an in-depth program exploring the crucial farm properties caught in the opening hours of the Battle of Gettysburg. Historians Jim Hessler, Andrew Dalton, and Phil Spaugy will guide attendees through the stories and battlefield action connected to the Harmon, Forney, and McClean farms, landscapes that became key points in the fierce fighting west and north of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863.

Held at Gettysburg History’s Battlefield Overlook Event Center in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the program examines the dramatic combat that unfolded from the morning clashes along Willoughby’s Run through the struggle for Oak Hill and beyond. Alongside military history, the presentation also highlights the personal experiences of the farm families whose homes and properties were swept into the chaos of battle.

Located in the heart of Adams County near the Gettysburg battlefield, the Battlefield Overlook Event Center provides a fitting setting for this immersive Civil War history program. A book signing with the presenters will follow the event.

Tickets are $10 for Gettysburg History members and $20 for general admission.
