Fridays on the Ridge – Union Mills and the Battle of Gettysburg

The Union Mills Homestead will present an historical exploration into the ancestral home of the prominent Shriver family, offering a compelling microcosm of American history. The event highlights how two families bound by blood, but deeply divided by the Civil War, experienced the chaotic days surrounding the Battle of Gettysburg in vastly different ways.

As thousands of Union and Confederate armies, supply wagons, stragglers, and wounded soldiers streamed past their doorsteps, acts of kindness and threats of violence were constantly punctuated by the sound of distant canon fire. Amidst the turmoil, the narrative also follows an enslaved family weathering the storm in the critical year leading up to the emancipation.

The event, taking place at Seminary Ridge Museum in Gettysburg, will be led by Kyle Dalton, a public history expert with over 20 years of experience who currently serves as the executive director of the Union Mills Homestead, a museum dedicated to rural American life in Carroll County, Maryland.
