Gettysburg Regiments and the Places They Called Home

Seminary Ridge Museum presents the third annual Summer Symposium Saturday, August 1 at 9:15am. Gettysburg Regiments and the Places They Called Home offers a daylong examination of units that fought on the Gettysburg Battlefield in July 1863 and further explores the communities from which they came. Four guest presenters, authors of renowned Civil War histories, bring their expertise as they and a staff historian explore a unit uniquely connected to Gettysburg’s Lutheran Seminary. Discover five regiments and the soldiers who made up their ranks, their experiences on the field and on the homefront, and the legacies of their service on America’s most famous battlefield.

Jared Peatman, Ph.D. – Dirigo’s Sons: From the Pine Tree State to Gettysburg with the Twentieth Maine
Carolyn Ivanoff – Men of the 17th Connecticut and the State they Called Home
Gerald Ankeny – ‘Heart rending to think of it:’ The 142nd Pennsylvania Infantry, the People of Somerset County, and the Battle of Gettysburg
Codie Eash – ‘Blood Stained and Scar-Honored:’ The 44th Georgia Infantry

In 2026, as the United States continues to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Seminary Ridge historians and educators present the people, places, and principles that shaped the shared American story.
