HGAC Educational Speakers Series: Women of War

Free and open to the public! On Sept. 17 at 7 p.m., HGAC’s Educational Speakers Program will present “Women of War: On the Front Lines of Care,” a talk by Melissa Winn of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Maryland. This program explores the remarkable stories of women who stepped into medical and humanitarian roles. From Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the pioneering surgeon who defied expectations in both medicine and dress, to vivandière Marie Tepe, advocate Cordelia Harvey, and battlefield nurse Clara Barton, discover how these determined women broke barriers, cared for soldiers, and helped redefine what women could accomplish during and after the Civil War.

The program is held at the GAR Building, 53 E. Middle Street in Gettysburg. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Melissa Winn is the Director of Marketing and Communications for the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Previously, she was the marketing manager for the American Battlefield Trust, and director of photography for HistoryNet, publisher of nine history-related magazines, including America’s Civil War, American History, and Civil War Times.
