History on the Square – The Life and Legacy of Rufus R. Dawes

History on the Square launches a new local history series in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, with an evening that blends storytelling, conversation, and community gathering in the heart of downtown Gettysburg. Taking place Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Hotel Gettysburg, this inaugural program brings together history enthusiasts for an engaging discussion focused on lesser-known figures connected to the American Revolution and Civil War memory.

Hosted by Hotel Gettysburg in collaboration with the Gettysburg Foundation, the evening features special guest host Judy Morley, PhD, Executive Director of the Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center. Dr. Morley will explore the life and legacy of Rufus R. Dawes, whose great-grandfather William Dawes is often remembered as the lesser-known “midnight rider” alongside Paul Revere. The program highlights overlooked stories that continue to shape the nation’s historical narrative while encouraging discussion and community connection in a relaxed cocktail-hour setting.

Held at Hotel Gettysburg at 1 Lincoln Square in Gettysburg, PA, the event includes hors d’oeuvres and one drink ticket for each guest. History on the Square combines educational programming with a lively social atmosphere, creating a fresh and engaging way to experience local history in Adams County.
