Holiday House Tour at the Historic Dobbin House

Journey through the Dobbin House, the oldest house in Gettysburg, built in the same year that the United States of America was founded – 1776, and the Gettysburg area for a joyous, self-guided tour of historic buildings that have been decorated for the holidays. This popular and highly-rated presentation highlights the Dobbin House and frontier life of Scots-Irish immigrants Rev. Alexander Dobbin and his wife, Isabella. Step back in time to know Rev. Dobbin- farmer, minister, theologian, educator and community leader, who helped shape the course of history in what is now Gettysburg and Adams County. His landmark stone home spans four centuries of American history, from the Revolutionary War and the creation of the United States, through the bloody Civil War, through the 20th Century Diorama Museum, to today’s life as a restaurant/tavern.

Note: The tour covers three floors and six staircases.

  • Savor a combination of history and entertainment celebrating the 249th birthday of the home:
Tour all the historically decorated rooms while interacting with 18th and 19th century antiques
See how the Dobbin family planned to defend themselves from Indian attacks
Observe the basement spring that provided water for the Dobbin family
View the fireplace cooking utensils in Mrs. Dobbin’s kitchen
Discover the secret hideout for enslaved people seeking refuge on the “Underground Railroad”
Hear what the Zeigler family experienced while living in the Dobbin House during the Battle of Gettysburg
Feel Rev. Dobbin’s presence in his library, study and parlour
