Life in the Aftermath – Songs and Stories of a Civil War Hospital’s closing

Christ Lutheran Church, 30 Chambersburg Street in Gettysburg, hosts a special commemorative edition of Songs and Stories of a Civil War Hospital on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 7 p.m.

Following the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, more than 21,000 wounded soldiers remained in a community of just 2,400 residents, with 160 field hospitals established throughout the area. Christ Church served as a hospital beginning July 1, caring for wounded soldiers until its closure on August 15, 1863.

The commemorative program includes Civil War-era songs, readings, poetry, and the reading of the names of soldiers known to have received care at the church. The evening concludes with the presentation of a 34-star American flag and the singing of the National Anthem.

All are welcome to attend this solemn remembrance. No tickets are required.
