Rebellion Taking Root – the 250th Anniversary of the Recruitment of Captain Michael Doudle’s Company of Riflemen

Calling All Revolutionary War Time Travelers! Bring the whole family on Saturday, August 23rd to “Rebellion Takes Root!” a free event where everyone can “join” the local militia that formed here in 1775 and marched to General George Washington and the Continental Army in Boston.

Experience a fun-filled morning at the courtyard in front of the historic Dobbin House, the oldest building in Gettysburg to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Recruitment of Captain Michael Doudle’s Company of Riflemen.

Kids and adults alike will be captivated by the lively debates between the Loyalists – “we are loyal to England’s King George III”, and the Revolutionaries – “we want to be free and independent of Great Britain.” Catch up on the latest town gossip from the market woman selling her wares. Watch as Captain Michael Doudle delivers a stirring recruiting speech, rallying local settlers to join the ranks.

Families will enjoy interactive activities, meet historical characters, and even participate in drills with the soldiers.

In the afternoon, programming shifts to the grounds of the Adams County Historical Society (625 Biglerville Road) where spectators will observe 18th century military tactics and firepower discipline on display before being treated to the trying of two compelling legal cases being heard by the courts martial.

What a fantastic way to learn about history while having fun together. Don’t miss out on this chance to be swept up in the excitement and make history come alive for your family!
