Seminary Ridge Museum presents Revolution on the Ridge: Preserving the Union, Conserving the Earth – The Environmentalism of American Civil War Veterans on Friday, April 24 at 3:30 p.m. at 111 Seminary Ridge in Gettysburg.
In this Arbor Day program, historian Codie Eash explores how the devastation of the Civil War shaped veterans’ views of the natural environment. After witnessing widespread destruction of farmland, forests, and landscapes during the conflict, many veterans became leaders in efforts to protect battlefields, design public parks, and advance forestry and conservation.
The program examines how the experiences of Civil War veterans helped influence the growth of environmental awareness and the preservation of natural spaces across the United States in the years following the war.
