Saturday, August 23rd as Gettysburg History and the Dobbin House join forces with the members of Spencer’s Additional Continental Regiment for an immersive look at the Gettysburg region in the early days of the American Revolution. Before the town was formally founded, it was a bustling crossroads for travelers heading west and south. The people who lived and worked here, like everyone else in the colonies, were caught up in the maelstrom of the rebellion against the British Crown. Come out to “Rebellion Takes Root!” in the tumultuous year of 1775. Spend the morning at the plaza in front of the Dobbin House, Gettysburg’s only standing structure from the 18th century.
Encounter patriots and loyalists hotly debating the wisdom of rebellion and a market woman purveying her wares in addition to the latest town gossip. Hear a stirring recruiting speech from Captain Michael Doudle as he fills the ranks of his company of soldiers headed to bolster General Washington’s ranks outside of Boston. It will be a significant recreation and remembrance of the events that unfolded at Samuel Gettys’ tavern 250 years ago in the summer of 1775. Spectators will be encouraged to sign up for the cause and join the troops for some drill too.
In the afternoon, programming will shift to the grounds of the Adams County Historical Society (625 Biglerville Road) where spectators will observe 18th century military tactics and firepower discipline on display before being treated to the trying of two compelling legal cases being heard by the courts martial. One matter will involve a soldier charged with desertion and forgery; the other will involve a female camp follower charged with striking an officer and using abusive language. Both cases are taken directly from 18th century primary source documentation and spectators will have the opportunity to help decide the cases.
