Sneak Preview of the Jack and Julia Hopkins House

Step inside one of Gettysburg’s most important preservation projects during this special open house at the historic Jack and Julia Hopkins House on July 2 beginning at 2 p.m. Presented by Gettysburg History, the program offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the ongoing restoration of the 1840s log home at 219 South Washington Street, future site of Gettysburg’s new Black History Museum.

Historians Jean Green and Andrew Dalton will guide visitors through the story of the Hopkins House, the preservation efforts underway, and the artifacts uncovered during restoration work. Located just south of downtown Gettysburg, the property provides an important connection to the borough’s Black history and adds new depth to the broader story of Gettysburg and Adams County during the 19th century.

This intimate Gettysburg history experience allows guests to explore an active restoration site while learning how historians and preservationists are working to protect and interpret the home for future generations. Registration is required, with tours limited to 15 people every 15 minutes.

The open house is free to attend, with donations encouraged but not required. Contributions may be made in person or online at www.gettysburghistory.org/donate.

Participants should meet at the Hopkins House, 219 South Washington Street, Gettysburg, PA, at their scheduled time. Free two-hour parking is available along South Washington Street and nearby streets. Because this is an active work site, appropriate footwear is recommended.
