Songs and Stories of a Civil War Hospital, Hospital Closing Edition brings a powerful commemorative program to Christ Lutheran Church, 30 Chambersburg St. in Gettysburg, on August 15 at 7 p.m. This special edition marks the closing of the Civil War hospital on August 15, 1863, and shares the authentic history of how the church served wounded soldiers during and after the Battle of Gettysburg.
The evening features live ensemble music, sing-alongs, poetry, and personal stories of soldiers and their families. Nathan Shepherd’s poem “Roll Call” helps set the tone for the hospital’s closing, followed by the reading of every recorded soldier treated at the church hospital. The program also includes the commemorative “stripping of the scene,” creating a reflective close to this meaningful Gettysburg history presentation.
Earlier in the day, Christ Lutheran Church hosts an open house with guided tours from noon to 3 p.m. The evening performance runs from 7 to 8 p.m.
