Sonora Smart Dodd: The Mother of Father’s Day

This educational program explores the remarkable story behind the woman whose determination led to the creation of Father’s Day in the United States.

In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd began a campaign in Washington State to establish a day honoring fathers. The first Father’s Day celebration took place the following year, yet national recognition did not arrive until 1972 after decades of advocacy. Presenter Betsy Roddy, Sonora Dodd’s great-granddaughter, shares insights into Mrs. Dodd’s life, her inspiration for recognizing American fathers, and the lasting impact of her efforts on American history and culture.
