The Thaddeus Stevens Society will celebrate the 234th birthday of Thaddeus Stevens on Saturday, April 4 at noon at Thad’s Place Annex, 52 Chambersburg Street in Gettysburg.
The free, public event will feature a picnic-style gathering with hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks, and birthday cake provided by the Society, along with a program presented by members of Christ Lutheran Church reflecting on Stevens’s life and legacy. Attendees are invited to bring a side dish or dessert to share.
A longtime Gettysburg resident, Stevens was a powerful voice in Congress and a leading figure among the Radical Republicans. He was instrumental in shaping Reconstruction after the Civil War and was a steadfast advocate for abolition and equal rights, leaving a lasting impact on American history.
