As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Gettysburg History hosts a special program exploring the story behind America’s founding document. On Saturday, June 20 at 10 a.m., Gettysburg resident and historian Tom McMillan presents a discussion on the creation of the Declaration of Independence at Gettysburg History Center, 625 Biglerville Road in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
McMillan, author of The Year That Made America, examines lesser-known details surrounding the Declaration, including why three official printed versions existed, why Thomas Jefferson’s original draft saw major edits, and why delegates waited until August 1776 to sign the document. The presentation offers a closer look at one of the most important documents in American history as the nation prepares for the America 250 commemoration.
Registration is required. Admission is free for Gettysburg History members and $10 for general admission. The program brings together Adams County residents and visitors with a shared interest in American history and the nation’s founding.
Gettysburg History, formerly the Adams County Historical Society, is a nonprofit organization founded in 1888 that continues to support education and preservation efforts tied to American history in Gettysburg and across Adams County.
