“The Fog of War at Gettysburg” Leadership in a Time of Crisis

The George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital in Gettysburg presents The Fog of War at Gettysburg: Leadership in a Time of Crisis on Friday, October 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. Licensed Battlefield Guide Rob Abbott leads this exploration of battlefield leadership, communication, and decision-making during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Prussian military theorist Carl von Clausewitz articulated the concept of the “fog of war” in his 1832 book On War. Although the work did not appear in English until 1873, Civil War commanders clearly understood the uncertainty, confusion, and limited information that shaped military decisions in the field.

Abbott examines how those conditions influenced Union and Confederate leaders at Gettysburg and how commanders worked to overcome them. His presentation focuses on leadership styles, military communications, written and verbal orders, and the movement of army commanders as events unfolded across the battlefield.

The program takes place at the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital, 488 Blacksmith Shop Road in Gettysburg. Ticket reservations are required. Ticket holders may drive directly to the property, where on-site parking is available for the program.
