The Old Hero Returns, John Burns LIVE in the Keeping Room Theater

Step into the warm glow of the Keeping Room Theater at 6:30 p.m. on July 17, July 24 and July 31, 2026, at the Farnsworth House Inn on Baltimore Street in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for an intimate, one-of-a-kind encounter with one of Gettysburg’s most unforgettable citizens.

The Old Hero Returns invites guests to sit fireside with John Burns—the aging, plainspoken, utterly determined patriot who walked onto the Gettysburg battlefield in 1863 armed with little more than grit, a borrowed rifle, and an unshakable sense of duty.

In this immersive hour, Burns reflects on the choices that carried him from his quiet life on Chambersburg Street to the front lines of the first day’s fighting. Through storytelling shaped by firsthand accounts and period sources, he shares his humor, his stubbornness, his wounds, and the legacy he never asked for but ultimately embraced.

Set against the backdrop of a brick hearth and wooden mantel, the Keeping Room Theater becomes a space where history feels close enough to touch—where the flicker of the fire and the shadows on the walls echo the courage of an ordinary man who refused to stay home.

Guests will leave with a deeper understanding of Burns not as a legend, but as a neighbor, a veteran, and a citizen whose bravery helped define Gettysburg’s story.
