There is But One Option for the Winter — Valley Forge

As America approaches the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, this special Gettysburg program takes a deeper look at one of the most pivotal moments of the Revolutionary War. In the winter of 1777, General George Washington and the Continental Army arrived at Valley Forge under mounting political pressure, economic strain, and military uncertainty. While the hardships of the encampment remain legendary, the reasons behind the army’s decision to occupy Valley Forge reveal a far more complex story about survival, leadership, and the future of the Revolution.

Historian Ken Gavin explores the strategic and political forces that shaped the Valley Forge encampment during this America250PA-related presentation on Saturday, May 30 at 2 p.m. at the Battlefield Overlook Event Center, located at 625 Biglerville Road in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The discussion also examines how the presence of the Continental Army transformed the surrounding community and influenced the broader war effort.

This Revolutionary War program offers history enthusiasts an engaging look at the decisions that shaped the nation during its fight for independence while connecting the legacy of Valley Forge to the ongoing commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary.

Admission is free for Gettysburg History members and $10 for general admission.
