Off the beaten path but close to it all, including historic Gettysburg, the Appalachian Trail, Caledonia State Park, and Michaux State Forest. Relax on a large screened-in porch, in the shade of our pines or on the banks of a mountain creek. Access your own streaming accounts through our TV/wifi. Great restaurants are nearby, or make use of our original 1950s efficiency kitchen and dine al fresco. You’re surrounded by wineries, farm markets and even a candy store. Central location to do it all!
Built during the tourism boom of Caledonia in the 1950s, our little 600-square-foot cottage exudes its original charm but with a few modern amenities. The master bedroom features a queen sized bed, while the guest bedroom is equipped with a twin trundle bed. Our guest bedroom also has an area for kids complete with toys and books, and a pack ‘n play is available upon request in advance. Each bedroom comes equipped with a sound machine and/or nightlight. The living room has a sleeper sofa with a full bed. While there are no closets, we do have luggage racks and a dresser to store your belongings. A walk-in shower will help wash off the dust of the day. Cool off with two window air-conditioners. The kitchen is fully stocked with utensils, pots, pans, plates, a toaster, microwave, small gas range and refrigerator. A coffee station is provided, with the first few cups on us.
Back a shared stone driveway, but close to the historic Lincoln Highway (Route 30), you’re exactly halfway between two of south central PA’s most charming small towns – Gettysburg and Chambersburg. We have plenty of dining suggestions for the area. Summer can be a busy time in Gettysburg, with long wait times at restaurants, so you’ll enjoy having the choice of two towns, in addition to the little haunts in between.
We call this little cottage the Sweet Retreat, because it’s steps away from our business, Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum & Candy Emporium, the area’s most unique attraction, with more than 12,000 elephant figurines of all sizes on display, and more than 1,000 kinds of sweet treats, from retro candies to homemade fudge and chocolates.
“Thank you Nicole for a lovely stay. I wish I had more time to visit this trip but I assure you that my next visit will be for a much, much longer visit. The peace & solitude was perfect for me. Your location is ideal for jaunts to Gettysburg, Chambersburg and even Hershey. The cottage is appointed so nicely and there was everything there I needed. The little complimentary box of Mister Ed’s fudge was delicious and made me find my way to the store for a few extra gifts (and treats for me) on my way out of town. What an incredible experience all the way around. Can’t wait to return.”
“It was such a treat to stay at the Sweet Retreat! The location was excellent for our anniversary in Gettysburg. Every morning we just hopped on SR 30 and were in town in 20 minutes. The property itself is peaceful and tucked away, with a creek and the porch is to die for. Nicole was very responsive to all our inquiries and included so many excellent suggestions for restaurants, sites to see, and things to do. Check-in/out was the smoothest I’ve ever had through Air BnB. Thank you for the excellent stay! We’ll definitely be back!”
“I would recommend this place to anyone. A beautiful location, quiet, well maintained and lovely cabin. Adorable inside and out. You will feel comfortable and relaxed here. I wish we could have spent many more days enjoying this place.”
