Get the GuideOK, so technically, fall hasn’t quite begun. But in Gettysburg – the popular season is on our doorstep, and we are immersing into everything autumn – from cool, crisp mornings to colorful leaves, apple dishes, country drives and more.
The fall is slowly becoming the hottest (yet coolest) time of year to visit America’s favorite historic destination … and for good reason.
Here are just a few of the many reasons that make September a great time to visit Gettysburg, Pennsylvania:
The cooler temperatures are coming, and Gettysburg is a great place to enjoy the chilly nights and crisp mornings – whether it’s walks around the battlefield, strolls around town or country drives on your motorcycle. And cooler temperatures mean hot drinks – from coffees to lattes and mochas. Check out our cafes and eateries.
But if it’s other refreshments you’re looking for, buy your tickets now for the 20th Annual Gettysburg Wine & Music Festival on September 7 and 8 at its new location – Granite Hill Camping Resort, just west of Gettysburg. Enjoy a wide assortment of live music and samples from more than 27 Pennsylvania wineries and distilleries.
The following weekend, in nearby Hanover, is the Snack Town Fall Fest – a one-day festival featuring great food, vendors and live music. Plan your stay in Gettysburg and take a short drive through the local countryside to enjoy this annual event that draws thousands.
Gettysburg isn’t just for Civil War enthusiasts. This small town as a unique connection with World War II, mostly through our favorite presidential resident – Dwight D. Eisenhower. On September 20-22, enjoy the World War II Weekend – featuring programs, family activities, guided tours and living history encampments. Include a stop at the World War II: American Experience Museum for an amazing collection of WWII vehicles, memorabilia, artifacts and special weekend programs.
If you’ve ever driven around the Gettysburg countryside, you know the region is rich in farming, but have you ever wondered about those barns that dot the rolling hills of Adams County? Historic Gettysburg Adams County invites you to not only learn about these barns, but to get a peek inside these iconic structures through their Annual Historic Barn Tour on September 21.
This next event is no small potatoes! Thomason’s Olde Thyme Herb Farm in nearby East Berlin invites you to take a drive east from Gettysburg for its annual Sweet Potato Festival, held September 21 and 22. In addition to the event namesake, this one-day festival also features crafts, music, alpacas and mums.
September is also a great time to get back out on the Adams County Pour Tour. The fall season brings new varieties, a fresh harvest and an amazing assortment of hard ciders, beers, wines and more. Learn more about this unique craft beverage trail and sign up at AdamsCountyPourTour.com.
And lastly, the apple harvest. Adams County, Pennsylvania is home to thousands of acres of apple orchards and dozens of apple varieties. Farm markets scattered throughout the countryside will be brimming with freshly picked apples – a great souvenir to take home for pies and more. Or, you can just buy the pie here too!
