Get the GuideIf you think summer is winding down, think again! Gettysburg is just getting warmed up, and there are plenty of summertime adventures that await in America’s favorite historic town.
Before the kids go back to school, before you venture up into the attic for your fall flannel, before you take a sip of that pumpkin spice latte, take one last summer getaway before it’s too late!
Here are just a few of the many reasons that make August a great time to visit Gettysburg, Pennsylvania:
The Annual Music Muster kicks off the month on August 2-3. Gettysburg National Military Park is host to this 27th annual event, which features live Civil War era music from a variety of performers and musical groups from around the county. Best of all – all performances are free!
Spending time with the kids. You may have already taken that week-long family vacation, but who says there’s only room for one summer getaway before the kids go back to school, take a couple days and have some fun. Gettysburg has a wide range of things to do – from historic tours, to farm adventures, outdoor recreation and so much more.
Or, if you’d rather leave the kids at home and take your own adventure – the second annual Gettysburg BrewFest and 5K is coming up soon on August 17. You can take part in one or both of the events that day, held at the Historic Daniel Lady Farm. Experience varieties from breweries across the region and enjoy live entertainment at one of Gettysburg’s most historic farms.
If it’s music you’re after, the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival from August 15-18 is one of the country’s most well-known bluegrass events – bringing together four straight days of top entertainment … all held at the Granite Hill Camping Resort just south of Gettysburg. Buy multi-day tickets for full experience of music, food and family-friendly fun.
Watch history come to life with the Gettysburg Heritage Center’s Night at the Museum events, held August 3 and 31 in the galleries of the popular visitor attraction. Learn amazing stories of Gettysburg’s own civilians during the epic battle that came to the town’s doorstep in 1863 through first-hand accounts presented by living historians.
Throughout the Gettysburg countryside, farmers are harvesting peaches and apples – a highlight of the Adams County Crop Hop – a collection of dozens of farm markets, farms and other agricultural adventures. Download your digital passport and explore the beautiful landscape that surround the historic town.
On August 20, and again in October, the Gettysburg Foundation pairs together two of our favorite things – campfires and pajamas. Bring the kids out to this free event, Pajama Storytime Around the Fire, for stories and songs at the Children of Gettysburg 1863 museum.
