Historic Gettysburg-Adams County (HGAC)
1360 Baltimore Pike
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Walking tours of Gettysburg’s only Underground Railroad site recognized by the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom begin Saturday, May 2 at 11 a.m. Led by HGAC volunteer guides, the experience offers a rare opportunity to explore one of the area’s most significant and compelling historic sites tied to the Underground Railroad.
Tours depart from the historical marker at the south end of the former Mulligan MacDuffer Adventure Golf parking lot, 1360 Baltimore Pike in Gettysburg. No reservations are required, and tours are held rain or shine. The walk to the mill is approximately a half-mile round trip and includes somewhat strenuous terrain.
The site of McAllister’s Mill, now in ruins with visible foundations and waterways, is believed to have been one of the first stops in Adams County for freedom seekers traveling north. The mill provided shelter to hundreds escaping slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War.
Suggested donations are $5 for students and $10 for adults. More information is available at https://www.hgaconline.org.
