More than 170,000 Union and Confederate soldiers converged on the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in July 1863. The Battle of Gettysburg was a horrific experience for the residents of this historic town. The end of the battle was truly the beginning of the real nightmare with more than 23,000 wounded and 12,000 dead men and horses left behind for the citizens of Gettysburg to deal with.

The tour begins with a walk through the Shriver House with a guide in period attire, detailing how the fighting impacted the Shriver family. At the conclusion of the tour, a Licensed Town Guide, walking along South Baltimore Hill (called Baltimore Street today), will talk about the fighting in the street and how other families were affected.

The Shriver House offers a special insight into the lives of the people of Gettysburg and how the Civil War, and in particular the Battle of Gettysburg, affected them. The story is told through the eyes of the Shriver family and gives a glimpse into the lifestyles, customs, and furnishings of the 1860s.

The Town Guide program was started in 2004 with an emphasis on the town and civilian history. The mission of the Association of Licensed Town Historians is to help the public gain an understanding of the Battle of Gettysburg by learning how the residents were impacted by the battle as well as their role in the aftermath.
